So I am planning on putting the Lincoln up on a jack and then two jack stands. However I can’t operate the emergency break. Does that even matter if the rear breaks are locked up? Should I cholk the back tires? I wanted to drain 8 gallons of diesel out of the engine and see if the engine is still locked up.

Chock the tires, just in case.

If the rear brakes are locked up still, then you probably shouldn’t worry, but chocks wouldn’t be a bad idea either. I’d be tempted to use chocks even with working e-brake. I’m betting the engine will still be basically locked up, but you should be a lot closer to popping free now than you were.

If you really aren’t sure, some chocks wouldn’t hurt. Also, be sure the jack stands are on solid metal and solid ground, if you are using frame make sure it isn’t swiss cheese frame. I’m assuming this hasn’t moved in a long time, so there is good probability that the frame is thin in a few places. It would help to stuff some plywood under the jack stands so they don’t sink in too far.

Throw a block of wood behind the tire juuust in case

So you think I should still drain the diesel or leave it in just for a little longer?

I was planning on putting plywood under the stands. This will be taking place in the grass

It looks fairly flat. If it is, and the rear brakes are frozen, and the tires are sunk into the grass, you probably don’t need to chock the wheels. Not that I couldn’t sit here and say “Don’t do it”, since you asked, but it’s probably an overcautious move. Also put something under the jack so it doesn’t sink in.

Good luck!

I don’t think there’s anything the diesel will do in two months that it won’t have done in one. I was mostly indicating there will probably be some trickery and/or abuse still needed other than that. One thing I should also mention - if you’ve got a spare place in a garage or somewhere that you don’t mind smelling like diesel, I would look on Craigslist for a parts washer. Diesel works perfectly okay as a parts washer fluid, even with old oil in it, and eight gallons is about a proper starting load minus the dregs - say, the first gallon or so that comes out that’s mostly old oil.

Also, if you are trying to get a frozen engine to turn, it wouldn’t hurt to pull the spark plugs and squirt a whole lot of marvel mystery oil in there. Leave the plugs out when you are trying to crank it over. Not that there will be any compression anyway, but just because.

How long has it been sitting?

I’ll answer the question from what I remember - quite a long time it’s been sitting, and related to that, the plugs are stuck. They’re on the list of things that need to be addressed in getting it turning - he went ahead with the diesel bath because it was cheap and didn’t involve a lot of tricky technique and he could do it while he waited.

Thanks. And the overcautious are the ones who survive and don’t get sent to the ER

Great tip, I have a 20 gallon vintage gas tank that looks like it will be getting some use.

And I should just be able to drain all the diesel like a regular oil change right?

I can’t see why not. Drain away! I’m hoping I’ll figure out a way to break loose some time in the next month or so for visiting 505Turbeaux as an accessory beer-drinker and rusty project prognosticator, so an extra day or so visiting the AF museum and making sympathetic doctor noises over the Lincoln may be in my future.

Yeah you said you will be doing that in June right? Keep me updated. If nothing else we can have a little Oppo meet up on your way through Ohio.

I’d like to see the plugs out, anyway - and the valves proved unstuck. The first one might require fire, but what’s an Oppo meetup without fire?
